Language Test Exemptions

Applicants may be determined as having vocational English if they meet certain criteria, without having to undertake an English test. These may include:

  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent in Australia or another English-language education system.
  • Completion of a qualification in Australia at Certificate III level or higher.

This is a guide only. Different student categories and visa types have different requirements.


Student Categories and English Requirements
1. Domestic Student

Domestic applicants are tested with Charter Australia’s internal LLN test. Exemptions may apply.

Vocational English Eligible for vocational courses (any level).
Intermediate English Eligible for vocational courses (Certificate III only); LLN support offered.
Developing English May not be eligible for vocational courses; determined on a case-by-case basis.
2. International Student (Student Visa)

International students apply through the Department of Home Affairs using external tests no more than 2 years old. Exemptions may apply. Refer to the Department of Home Affairs for information:

Vocational English Eligible for vocational courses (any level).
Intermediate English Eligible for vocational courses after English study (refer to visa requirements).
Developing English Not eligible for vocational courses. Eligible for English study only.
3. Study-Work Program (Working Holiday Visa)

Study-Work Program applicants can use either external tests (no more than 2 years old) or they can be tested using Charter Australia’s internal placement test (this can be done online while outside of Australia). Exemptions may apply.

Vocational English Eligible for vocational courses (any level). English study is optional.
Intermediate English Eligible for Certificate III + English for Healthcare & Nursing (concurrent courses).
Developing English Not eligible for vocational courses. Eligible for English study only.
4. ELICOS Students (Any Visa)

Applicants who only want to study English and not a vocational course will be placed into an English course that matches their needs. Applicants can use either external tests or they can be tested using Charter Australia’s internal placement test (this can be done online while outside of Australia).
